Today, Tuesday 10th October, is World Mental Health Day. Not only is it an important day to raise awareness of mental health, it also focuses on showing everyone that mental health matters.
Did you know 1 in 4 people experience mental health problems each year?
This year The World Federation of Mental Health are urging is all to remember … “Mental health is a universal human right”.
It is important that we recognise some of the key situations that can negatively affect your mental health:
· Troubles at work – 1 in 6.8 people experience mental health problems in the workplace.
· Financial issues – Households living in the lowest 20% income bracket in Great Britain are 2-3 times more likely to develop mental health problems compared to those living in the highest.
· Personal stress – In 2017, 74% of people have felt so stressed they have been overwhelmed or unable to cope.
· Homelessness – In 2014, 80% of homeless people in England reported experiencing mental health issues.
Although many people are now more aware of mental health problems there is often still a negative stigma surrounding those using treatment, with many people still not receiving the right support or in some cases, any support at all.
So how can you support yourself and others?
· Self-care – Taking time for yourself is key.
· Diet - Nutrition is an important factor in mental health so maintaining a balanced diet is vital.
· Routine – Getting enough sleep and good sleep is also really important.
· Let us help you – There are always people that want to help and support you when you are struggling.
· A problem shared is a problem halved – Don’t bottle up any problems and feelings you have. Share them!
